A wine right in the stylistic line from Aunty Eva, all tropical fruit, some nectarine and ripe lemon. It went down well with my hosts at dinner a few nights ago, which might be seen as a mixed message or a backhanded compliment. One of them has a perpetually blocked nose, the only variable being the degree. She thought it 'sweet' (which it is not - it is fruity but it finishes quite dry) but enjoyed it and, in the end that is an achievement, as anything not a soft Barossa style seems to offend her.

Length and intensity are comfortably in the excellent category. It is an easy drink but there is plenty going on to engage the mind as well as the senses.

It was quite a happy night and this wine was part of it. That is probably the best recommendation one can make for a wine - I think I know a little of wine and I liked it and a wine innocent liked it.

There is a good review up on site, although I don't get the smoke or anise, but there is room for a bit of variation. I do get some spiciness and whilst I might describe it differently (it is more ginger to me), I suspect we are talking about the same sensation.

This is a really enjoyable and great value wine. It is damned hard to put down. Something funky and svelte about it has me thinking of Glenn Hughes' jazzy, funky song 'Never Take You Down' from 1996, with those fluid jazz guitar stylings and then some power coming through from the rhythm section to keep it driving. That is this wine.

This is still drinking really well.
Pure, crisp with citrus, sherbet, spice.
Looking at the development of this wine and the current freshness I think that this will be fine for another 5 years.

Oh! I do hate being the first to review a vintage of a wine. I like to stand on the shoulders of giants, but even pygmies will do. I can carefully calibrate what I write based on others and avoid the risk that is expressed in the saying 'better to be silent and seem a fool than to speak and prove it'.

At any rate, this is a very pleasing Riesling (almost rhymes) - there are some reductive elements but they don't seem out of balance to me and whilst there is some ripe apple, there is also a deal of lovely tropical fruits and some lemon. The palate has zing and a sense of slate/wet stone that I like. The acid is fine and whilst, to my palate, perhaps a little fierce, I think most drinkers will not find it so.

Guzzle now and over the next few years. Cellar if you want to take some risks with the reductive elements.

This tasted straight out of the diesel pump on the local Shell garage forecourt, reeking of kerosene. Nonetheless, there was lime and green fruit, lubricated with a drizzle of oil. The savoury and minerally was supported with firm acidity which both refreshed and added lift and complexity. As it developed further the style turned to off-dry, leaving a sweetish, lingering finish. CHP 90pts

Pale lemon. Smoky, chalky profile. Green apple and ripe lemon. White peach. Anise and mint. The palate is quite generous with 21gr. RS which are not evident at all. High acidity. 11.5% abv. Light body.

BBR.

After the bloodbath of the last Eva, I am delighted to report that this wine is free of funky dogs and nasty things. This is very good Riesling and very good value.

Given the warm and very dry 2022 vintage, it is a surprise to find this wine shows more like a cooler but dry year. Apparently, the vines shut down for significant periods of the summer and harvest came in far later than expected, but in very good condition. Hence the apparent paradox of a warm dry year drinking like a cool one.

The fruit gives lemon sorbet both in terms of flavour and mouth feel. This is a character I find that speaks of Germany. There are lemons and some lime. Tropical fruit is there but more restrained than in say 2016, 2019, 2020. There is real acid zing and this is perhaps not quite so different to Australian Riesling acid and it is the one point I am not so happy with. The best German Riesling years feature this wonderful 'soft', acid that delivers crisp fruit yet avoids sourness or that searing, gum savaging experience one gets in so many Oz Rieslings.

The acid is a small matter in the end. Enjoy this because it is fun, it manages to also be serious and it is lovely, a thing of beauty.

Doubtless there are more unpleasant experiences than trying to drink this wine; smelling it might be one, and so might having a prostitute, coming off a long night's work in the seedier parts of Hamburg, suffering a UTI and incurable thrush, urinate on you. So, there are worse things.

It is easy to criticize and another thing entirely to actually create, even things one does not enjoy. I have immense respect for this maker and have absolutely adored other vintages of anything she makes. I am not a professional in the wine industry, I don't have a particularly good palate and in recognition of the matter in my first sentence of this paragraph, when I really don't like a wine, I look to see what other, better, palates have thought.

Here is what a person far more competent than me thought:

"Super-flinty with stacks of Amalfi lemon and nutty apple in the very youthful nose, this is an excellent village wine. Sleek and filigree, with staggering wet-stone minerality. It is at the lower limit of medium-bodied, but with a very long, diamond-bright finish. Excellent aging potential!” 94 points, Stuart Pigott writing for James Suckling's website.

I think it is fair to say that I am at a polar opposite to Herr Pigott, unfortunately. I will take you to the 'nutty apple' as being at the heart of the matter. I smell and taste it as apple cider, reminiscent of the funkier styles from Normandy. I get a lot of aldehyde. A touch can add complexity but to me it is totally out of control here and I have waited for 2 days to make this note, to see if it blows off, or other characters come up. They don't.

I was advised by a reputable source, a professional wine writer (who works in the wine trade as well) that her firm loved some of the 2022 releases from Eva Fricke, but also found unacceptable levels of microbial infection in others. She didn't volunteer what type of infection and I did not press, but aldehydes can be a biproduct of some microbial infections, my research tells me. I also got some underlying pong reminiscent of burnt rubber. Good stuff.

Given the views of Pigott and the quality of the maker, try for yourself. I will still be lining up for her 2023 wines - everyone can have a bad year. However, it gives me no pleasure at all to say that I found this wine totally unacceptable and unredeemable.

Elegant Riesling! Not the acidity I expect from German Riesling (Trocken / GG), softer, tropical fruit, peach, minerals, melon, honey, white fruit finish. Wining with Els & Steef.

Sehr dunkles Gelb, wirkt gereift.

Off dry, fruity and fresh.
Light fruity flavour which lingers long in the mouth. Very easy to drink - enough interest to enjoy and taste on its own (but think it would pair well with a selection of cheese). Perfect on a warm and muggy Melbourne summers evening. Would like to try more…

Funky expression of Riesling but still with plenty of typicality.
Piercing acidity and a lot of lemon flavors with a good depth and bitter aftertaste. This surprised me a bit as I had expected a more "clean" style of Riesling so the natural style of the wine might have felt exaggerated. But, it was definitely there. Still, quite a nice wine with lots of personality.
